Summary

Batman and Robin talk about children and the stars.

Notes

Childish Dreams

Robin took a breath, preparing himself to head back to the Batcave. He turned to Batman, ready for the expected order to make his way to the Batmobile only to pause.

Batman was not looking at him or out at the city as he usually did. Instead, he was looking up at the sky.

Damian frowned and turned his gaze skyward as well.

“What are you doing?” He expected to find a threat but there was nothing but darkness and a few dim lights.

Grayson hummed, lightly. It was not a sound Batman would make and smiled, his eyes didn’t leave the sky as he answered.

“The stars are out.”

“Hardly.” Damian scoffed.

They were in the city, the only reason they could see anything at all was because of how tall the building they’d ended patrol on was.

“Have you ever been stargazing before?” Grayson didn’t acknowledge Damian’s lack of enthusiasm.

“You can hardly call this stargazing.” Damian answered.

Grayson’s smile grew a bit.

“I used to, all the time.” He continued, fondly. “I heard that the stars looked different depending on where you were and well, the circus traveled a lot. I promised myself I’d see every different sky.”

They were silent for a moment.

“A childish dream.” Damian said.

“Oh, definitely.” Grayson agreed. “The best kind.”

Damian wasn’t quite sure what he meant by that. He tried to make out more than the few faint stars and satellites he had seen at first glance.

It was a futile effort.

“I… ” He wasn’t sure what he wanted to say. “My mother took me outside Nanda Parbat to see the stars once. I tried to count them all.”

“A childish dream.” Grayson smiled, it did not appear to be mocking.

“I suppose.” Damian agreed.

“The best kind.” He said softly. With that, he took a deep breath and finally looked down to meet Damian’s eyes. “Ready to go?”

“Yes.”

“Race you to the Batmobile?” Grayson challenged.

Damian grinned.

He would not be losing this time.
